Halloween Safety Tips

A favorite holiday for many kids due to the insane amounts of free candy they receive, but hated by dentists everywhere, Halloween is quickly approaching!

Today we have a few tips to help keep you and your precious ghouls and goblins safe this year.

1.  Many malls and shopping centers have trick-or-treating events during the afternoon. This is a great option for the younger kids especially. It is still light out, many are indoors and warm and you are done before bedtime.

2.  Make sure any masks or makeup do not effect your child's vision. It's dark out, there are lots of people and they are hopped up on sugar and excitement. There is no reason to give fate another chance to help them end up with their face on the pavement or into a pole or other child.

3. For the reasons stated above, be sure capes, pants, tails, etc. are just above ground level so your child does not trip.

4.  Only go to well lit houses. Do not go to houses with no lights.

5. Walk to the door with your child or at least close so you can see them.

6. Plan you route ahead of time and tell your child. This is for your sanity as well as safety. Plan out your route and tell the kids ahead of time to help prevent meltdowns when it's time to go home. Make sure you are in a familiar neighborhood.

7. Avoid leashes. It can be tempting to use a child harness or bring your pet, but leashes can cause major safety problems on a crowded sidewalk in the dark. Leave your pet at home and opt for a stroller and holding hands.

8. Keep warm. Be sure your child is dressed warm enough for the entire trip you have planned.

9. Bring a flashlight and have glow sticks, lights or something reflective on your child. This will not only help cars and other people see your child, but it is a great way to tell your child apart from all the other little monsters charging each house!

10.  Check your child's candy! I know you're tired and they have a lot, but check that candy! You can pick out a few pieces that are okay for them to eat that night and go through the rest once they are in bed. Throw away anything that is open or looks off to you as well as anything homemade from someone you don't know.
